If you want to go rainbow trout fishing, Alaska has some of the best angling grounds in the world. With its pristine waters, untouched wilderness and abundance of trout, it's a fisherman's (or woman's) paradise. However, not every river or bay will automatically yield the biggest rainbow trout or the most. You have to know where and when to go. For a breakdown of the best spots for rainbow trout angling in Alaska, keep reading. Alagnak River The Alagnak River is well known for its rainbow trout fishing. Alaska anglers say that mid-to-late June is often the best time for this well-known, yet uncrowded spot. Because the Nonvianuk and Kukalek, two premier trout rivers, come together to form the Alagnak, it's one of the best trout and salmon spots in the world. Upper Kenai River The Kenai River is constantly spotted with fly fishers. Why? Because it's some of the best rainbow trout fishing in the state. With its wild fish and stunning, turquoise waters, there is a reason why the Kenai river is often called the “mystic waters.” Though the Kenai is best known for its king salmon (Chinook) fishing, the river is also a great spot for rainbow trout fishing. Alaska natives and veterans often fish this 82-mile river for some of the largest trout in the world. Kvichak River The Kvichak River runs between Bristol Bay and Lake Iliamna. While the river is also known for its salmon fishing, real anglers know it's a rainbow trout goldmine in June, just after the ice goes out and up until the end of the month. The average rainbow trout on the Kvichak is between 22 and 26 inches. The Alaska Trout Fishing Season If you're planning to go rainbow trout fishing, Alaska starts its season June 08th. It runs until mid September, though certain spots have their peak periods depending on that year's fish migration. Call ahead to guarantee you won't be disappointed.
