Alaska Rainbow Fishing: Tips for A Successful Rainbow Trout Fishing Trip in Alaska

Custom Search

Alaska is famous for its runs of the five species of Pacific salmon, but also its fantastic Alaska rainbow fishing. When salmon are spawning, the Alaska rainbow trout feed almost exclusively on salmon eggs. After the salmon spawn and die, experienced anglers can use rabbit-strip flies that imitate drifting and decaying salmon flesh.

For more tips like these on how to catch the tasty Alaskan rainbow trout with the best lures, keep reading.

Where to Catch Rainbow Trout in Alaska

The best place to catch a trophy rainbow trout is the land mass adjacent to Bristol Bay, stretching from the Kuskokwim River in the north to the Alaskan Peninsula in the south, also known as mecca. The trout fishing here is divided into two distinct areas - the Wood River/Tikchiks in the north and the Iliam Sall district to the south.

The northern territory has more lightly fished streams and smaller (2 to 4 pound) average trout, while the Iliamna zone has larger fish and also more angling pressure per river mile.

How to Lure Alaska Rainbow Trout

Trout are used to seeing most of their food-insects, eggs, and bits of salmon carcass-drifting freely in the current, rolling along near the bottom. A floating line, long leader, and split-shot helps present flies that imitate these food items.

There will be times, particularly with sculpin and leech patterns, when a sinking-tip line is the right choice. It keeps your fly deep and imparts a seductive swimming motion.

When fishing with a floating line and strike indicator, use untapered monofilament between the indicator and the fly. This helps sink the fly and reduces drag.

Leader length should be approximately one and a half times the water depth. When high-sticking without an indicator, use a short tapered leader and long tippet, both for the reasons stated above and because it reduces the need for weight.

Flies and beads representing single salmon eggs are widely used for Alaska rainbow fishing. They match the most important and vastly abundant food source available during the trout's short growing season.

Eggs aren't the only thing spawning salmon contribute to the food chain. Rainbow Trout also feed voraciously on dead, decomposing salmon carcasses. Carcass season runs from early August through late September, a reflection of the heaviest incidence of salmon deaths.

In Alaska and typically online, you can find great lures that are designed to resemble salmon flesh or simply use flesh as bait.

Alaska rainbow fishing is a great way to get out of the busy rush of salmon fishing and find yourself in isolated waters, untouched by the hundreds of salmon fishers.
